Portraying Hong Kong: Old-Style Photo Studios 肖像香港:舊式影樓文化

Lam Kwok Shing, owner of Sammy Photo Studio, shares on the culture, history and significance of old-style photo studios in Hong Kong through personal anecdotes and an interactive show-and-tell of objects from the studio. The session will include Lam’s interpretation of Yee I-Lann’s works on view that repurposes portraitures found in a similar old-style photo studio in Malaysia.

Lam Kwok Shing 林國盛

Born in 1949, Lam Kwok Shing is the owner and in-house photographer of Sammy Photo Studio, an old-style photo studio located in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong. Lam began his career as a young apprentice in the 1970s, working as a dark room technician for the studio, previously called Jim Jim. In 1996, Lam took over the studio and renamed it. The studio continues to photograph portraits in film. 林國盛,生於1949年,是油麻地一所舊式影樓善美影室的老闆兼駐場攝影師。林國盛於1970年代加入當時仍稱為「尖尖」的影室當黑房學徒,其後於1996年正式接管業務,易名「善美」。影室持續堅持以菲林拍攝人像。
